Cycle Trip to Mahachai with Grasshopper Adventures

IMG_6006

TRAVEL DATE: 30 May 2015
DESTINATION: Samut Sakhon Province

Grasshopper Adventures offers bicycle tours all over Thailand and the region. I have done a bicycle and boat tour with them before in Bangkok (see tweets).  This time it was a one day tour by train and bicycle to the Gulf of Thailand in Samut Sakhon province. This area is known locally as Mahachai. We first cycled to Wong Wian Yai railway station in Bangkok, and then caught the train to Mahachai. We then cycled down to the coast. We visited a mangrove conservation centre, salt pans and fishing villages.  During the trip, I tweeted live on @RichardBarrow. Click here for the embedded tweets.

The following map shows the places that we visited during the trip:

Samut Sakhon is only a short distance from Bangkok and you can get there easily by train or bus. If you have your own car, the journey takes less than an hour from Bangkok. Samut Sakhon was formerly called Tha Chin probably because, in the old days, it had been a trading port dealing with a vast number of Chinese junks. The name of the town was changed to “Mahachai” when Mahachai Canal was dug in 1704 to join the Tha Chin River to the town. Later, the town was renamed Samut Sakhon by King Rama IV but it is still popularly called “Mahachai” by the villagers.

Day Trip to Don Wai Riverside Market

Giant dragon at Wat Samphran in Nakhon Pathom

TRAVEL DATE: 24 August 2014
DESTINATION: Nakhon Pathom Province

On Sunday I went on a daytrip with a group of friends to the nearby Nakhon Pathom province. The plan was to visit four attractions which included two floating markets. But, in the end we only visited two places as we stayed longer than we had planned. Plus we ate a lot of food at Don Wai which is a foodies paradise. During the trip, I tweeted live on @RichardBarrow. Click here to see those pictures and reports.

Day Trip to Chachoengsao

Giant Reclining Ganesha at Wat Samanratanaram

TRAVEL DATE: 3 August 2014
DESTINATION: Chachoengsao Province

On Sunday I took a group of friends on a day trip to Chachoengsao Province to the East of Bangkok. It was a full day as we arrived at our first destination at 9 a.m. for breakfast and we didn’t get home until sunset. Like most trips of this nature, it is difficult if not impossible to do with public transport. You either need your own car or rent a taxi for the day. During the trip, I tweeted live on @RichardBarrow. Click here to see those pictures and reports.
