Two-Day King’s Wisdom trip to Nakhon Si Thammarat

This weekend I flew to Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in Southern Thailand for a two-day trip to visit the royally-initiated Pak Phanang River Basin Development Project and Baan Laem Homestay. This is part of the King’s Wisdom five tourism routes across Thailand. Click here for a Google map of all of the places that we visited.

Date of trip: 8-9 September 2018

DAY ONE: Boarding Air Asia FD3188 from Don Mueang to Nakhon Si Thammarat. Flight time is just over one hour

First stop in Nakhon Si Thammarat is breakfast at Kopi. I started with a strong coffee with Pa Thong Ko (Chinese donuts). Then Bak Kut Teh (chicken and mushroom soup), Kua Kling (chicken in a dry southern curry), and Moo Yang (grilled pork). Map:

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is the main Buddhist temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat. During February, there’s a large temple fair here where people take part in a procession to bring long pieces of cloth to the temple to wrap around the main chedi. Map:

At Ban Nang Talung Suchart (Shadow Puppet Museum) in Nakhon Si Thammarat, you can learn about the ancient craft of shadow puppetry. Here you can watch them carving & decorating shadow puppets made from cow hide. You can also watch a shadow puppet show. Map:

Lunch today was at Khanom Chin Mae Yai (ขนมจีนแม่ยายเส้นสด น้ำแกงปูม้า). Khanom chin is fresh, thin rice noodles that is served with a variety of curries and side dishes. Map:

This afternoon, we visited the royally-initiated Pak Phanang River Basin Development Project in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Here we learned about the work by King Bhumibol. One of his projects was the Uthokwipat Prasit Watergate which helps separate salt & fresh water. Map:

DAY TWO: Good morning from Nakhon Si Thammarat in Southern Thailand. Whenever you’re visiting a new city, it’s often worth to get up early, skip the hotel breakfast buffet, and go exploring in the local market. This early morning weekend market is on Om Kai Wachirawuth Road in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Map:

This morning we visited Ban Laem Homestay in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Here you can join activities such as early morning trip in a fishing boat to see the local way of life & also take part in planting of mangrove saplings. Map:

The highlight of a visit to Ban Laem Homestay is the mud spa. It is supposed to be very good for your health. Visit them on Facebook Banlaemhomestay for more information. Map:

Lunch today was at Lae Lay Sichon (แล เล), next to Sichon Beach in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Good seafood and some fine views of the river and nearby sea. My favorite dishes were soft shelled crab curry and Tom Yum spicy soup with prawn. Map:
