Four Province Dinosaur Trip in Isaan

This weekend I am on a three-day trip in Northeastern Thailand. The provinces that I am visiting are Nakhon Phanom, Sakhon Nakhon, Kalasin & Khon Kaen. I’ve been invited by the Department of Mineral Resources. The theme of this trip is “dinosaurs”. I did a similar trip last year in Khon Kaen. Click here to see photo highlights of that trip. The Google Map of this trip can be seen here.

Trip date: 7-9 September 2017

DAY ONE: Good morning from Don Mueang airport. Today I’m flying Air Asia to Nakhon Phanom in Northeastern Thailand for a 3-day tripใ For the next 3 days I will be in Nakhon Phanom, Sakhon Nakhon, Kalasin & Khon Kaen at the invitation of the Ministry of Natural Resources

Boarding Thai AirAsia FD 3398 from Bangkok to Nakhon Phanom. Flight time is just over an hour.

Phra That Tha Uthen in Nakhon Phanom, on the bank of the Mekong, houses relics of the Lord Buddha’s disciple.

DAY THREE: Good morning from Kalasin province in Northeastern Thailand. Sunny at the moment but chance of a thunderstorm later.

Red pork (moo daeng) on rice for breakfast. 40 Baht.

The dinosaur footprints in Phu Faek Forest Park (วนอุทยานภูแฝก), Kalasin, were discovered by two schoolgirls in 1996. There are 21 footprints in total, with seven of them really clear. The footprints are believed to be about 140 million years old. The park also has done petrified wood. Map:

Phu NamchanFish Fossil Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์ภูน้ำจั่น) in Kuchinarai district of Kalasin. 200 fossils found. Only replicas on show. Fossils now kept in the museum where we will go next. Map:
It’s not easy to find Phu Namchan Fish Fossil Museum as it’s in the middle of nowhere & there are no signs.

Lunch at Tainicom Restaurant (ร้านอาหารไทนิคม) in Sahatsakhan District, Kalasin. Map: Dinosaur Park is a small collection of dinosaurs beside the main road in Sahatsakhan District, Kalasin. Great for kids. Map:,103.517375&hl=en-GB&gl=uk #Thailand.

Anyone with an interest in dinosaurs should visit Sirindhorn Museum in Kalasin. It has the largest collection of dinosaur bones in Thailand

I was lucky to be able to inspect the laboratory where scientists were working on dinosaur bones. Normally this isn’t open to the public.

Behind Sirindhorn Museum you can visit the excavation site where 700 dinosaur bones were found. The most complete Thai dinosaur is here.

Sirindhorn dinosaur museum is open Tuesday-Sunday. Admission is 100B for adults & 50B for kids. Map: I was told there is a white chedi on top of the hill behind the museum. I was too lazy to go so I sent my drone instead #DroneTourism

Dinner tonight in Khon Kaen DAY THREE: Good morning from Khon Kaen. A beautiful blue sky to start this day. How’s the weather where you are?

Map: One of the famous places in Khon Kaen to have breakfast is at Em Ot (เอมโอช) on Klang Mueang Road. I had Kai Kra Ta, pan fried eggs. This alone is 25 Baht. But a set with two bread rolls, orange juice and coffee/tea is 90 Baht. Map: #ThaiFood #Thailand

Nice & quiet where we are having lunch on Ubolratana lake, but I can hear disco music in the distance. I sent my drone to take a look.

Thais are not very imaginative in naming places. This is Bangsaen 2. On the other side of Ubolratana lake in Khan Kaen there is Pattaya 2.

  1. Paul Ward says:

    Hi Richard,
A great post – Can I ask is this an organized trip that the department of Natural Resources regularly organize to the public or was a special invitational event? It looks like a great trip that I could do myself with the car. However, I think it would be a lot more fun as part of a group with the added knowledge of the organisers. If you have any advice or contact information it would be gratefully received. kind regards, Paul
