Cycle Trip to Mahachai with Grasshopper Adventures

TRAVEL DATE: 30 May 2015
DESTINATION: Samut Sakhon Province

Grasshopper Adventures offers bicycle tours all over Thailand and the region. I have done a bicycle and boat tour with them before in Bangkok (see tweets).  This time it was a one day tour by train and bicycle to the Gulf of Thailand in Samut Sakhon province. This area is known locally as Mahachai. We first cycled to Wong Wian Yai railway station in Bangkok, and then caught the train to Mahachai. We then cycled down to the coast. We visited a mangrove conservation centre, salt pans and fishing villages.  During the trip, I tweeted live on @RichardBarrow. Click here for the embedded tweets.

The following map shows the places that we visited during the trip:

Samut Sakhon is only a short distance from Bangkok and you can get there easily by train or bus. If you have your own car, the journey takes less than an hour from Bangkok. Samut Sakhon was formerly called Tha Chin probably because, in the old days, it had been a trading port dealing with a vast number of Chinese junks. The name of the town was changed to “Mahachai” when Mahachai Canal was dug in 1704 to join the Tha Chin River to the town. Later, the town was renamed Samut Sakhon by King Rama IV but it is still popularly called “Mahachai” by the villagers.
